Profile

C or C Programmer
This is part of a clean room reverse engineering project. This position operates inside the clean room.
In this position you will play an important role by implementing computer software from a specification document. The specification document will describe a compiler and an assembler along with supporting tools. You will also write instructions or manuals to guide end users in the use of the software.
The software described in the specification is to be written in the C or C programming language, at your choice. You will be expected to do your work on GNU/Linux systems like Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc. and to be familiar with developing programs to work on such systems, and with use of the GNU build system and toolchain (GNU Autoconf, Automake, GCC, etc.)
For legal reasons you must have no prior knowledge of a company called Infocom that developed computer games such as Zork in the late 1970s and into the early 1990s. You must also have no prior knowledge of the Zork Implementation Language (ZIL), the ZILCH compiler, the ZAP assembler, or the Z-machine.
You must work only from the provided specification and are forbidden from doing any independent research on those topics until after the project is completed and the clean room is closed down.
You will be expected to certify these things.
Failing to strictly follow established procedure could compromise the integrity of the clean room, contaminating the resulting software and making it unusable. If that happens the project will need to be cancelled and started over with someone else.
You will be given a dedicated point of contact for questions about the specification. However, the contacts responses must, for legal reasons, be limited to providing updated versions of the specification should that be determined to be necessary.
Tasks:
* Write, analyze, review, and rewrite programs using specifications, workflow charts and diagrams, and applying knowledge of computer capabilities, subject matter, and symbolic logic.
* Correct errors by making appropriate changes and rechecking the program to ensure that the desired results are produced.
* Perform revisions or expansions to increase operating efficiency or adapt to new requirements.
* Consult with dedicated clean room contact as needed to clarify specification intent, report problems, and request changes.
* Conduct trial runs of programs to be sure they will produce the desired information and that the instructions are correct.
* Compile and write documentation of program development and subsequent revisions, inserting comments in the coded instructions so others can understand the program.
* Write or contribute to instructions or manuals to guide end users.
Skills:
* Writing computer programs in C and/or C for various purposes.
* Compiler, decompiler and assembler software - Incremental compiler software, one and two-pass assemblers, decompilers.
* The GNU/Linux operating system such as Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.
* GNU Autotools
* File versioning software such as git
* Writing: Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
* Complex Problem Solving: Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
* Critical Thinking: Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
* Communicating with Supervisors - Providing information to supervisors by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
* Interpreting the Meaning of Information for Others - Translating or explaining what information means and how it can be used.
* Establishing and Maintaining Interpersonal Relationships - Developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and maintaining them over time.
