Family Law/Domestic Violence Clinical Fellow
The Clinical Fellow will work closely with the Legal Aid Bureau's staff and students to provide direct legal representation to low income clients in family law cases. Under the supervision of experienced family law attorneys, the Fellow will both assist in the supervision of clinical students and advocate directly on behalf of survivors of domestic violence. Support the Bureau's teaching program by meeting regularly with students, helping them to prepare and strategize for hearings or negotiations, reviewing students' written work, providing regular, detailed feedback to students, and offering guidance in basic legal skills. Also meet regularly with the Bureau's Clinical Instructors; assist in conducting case rounds and seminars on practice skills and substantive law; assist with trainings, and participate in the outreach, community engagement, and law reform initiatives of the practice area. If interested, may have the opportunity to learn and represent clients in other areas of the Bureau's practice, including unemployment and disability benefits appeals. Represents a unique opportunity to join company’s clinical program, to work in a dynamic public interest and clinical teaching law office, and to advocate on behalf of survivors of domestic violence. Report to the Bureau’s Faculty Director and Administrative Director. Must have received JD degree within the last three years. Massachusetts Bar admission-or the ability to receive temporary admission pursuant to Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Rule 3:03-required. Experience in family law, a demonstrated commitment to domestic violence issues, and ability to thrive in a high-volume litigation practice strongly preferred. The position commences as soon as possible, ideally in June 2015, and is for a fixed term of one year without expectation of renewal. Should have superior oral and written communication skills; superior motivation and initiative and the ability to work creatively within broad program goals; ability to learn and achieve highest level of professional practice and mentoring skills; an interest in and aptitude for supervision and teaching; and superior organization and time management skills.
