Provide legal advice in connection with insurance and reinsurance matters
Support the development and maintenance of a strong culture of compliance
Manage outside counsel, when brought in to assist
Monitor legal developments in the areas of insurance, reinsurance and compliance; develop an understanding of regulations and laws that impact the business and advise on same
In conjunction with General Counsel, manage/support the management of disputes and litigations
Apply combined business and legal judgment to proposed deals, relationships and other issues requiring legal attention
Provide ongoing tactical advice and support in general matters and transactions
Qualifications/Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree, J.D., with 8 years’ experience advising insurance or reinsurance legal entities on insurance regulations and laws
Must be a member in good standing of one or more state bars or the D.C. bar, Kansas and/or Missouri preferred
Desired Characteristics:
Broad knowledge of legal and compliance risk areas associated with life and health insurance, with a focus on insurance investments
Prior experience in large law firm or in-house legal department
Able to translate legal concepts into practical business solutions
Strong commitment to integrity and professionalism
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills and the ability to identify and prioritize issues and devise solution
Able to work independently or with a group
Proven leadership and business partnering skills
Strong interpersonal skills – able to effectively interact with senior management
Experience leading successful negotiations
Proven success and ability to set priorities and drive projects to conclusion
Demonstrated ability to think and lead on a strategic level within an organization
