Director, Legal Analysis and Writing for LLM and SJD Programs and Co-Director of the Indigent Criminal Justice Practicum
The candidate to lead instruction and curriculum development efforts, particularly legal writing, for international students enrolled in companys LL.M. and S.J.D. programs, and to co-direct the Law School’s Indigent Criminal Justice Practicum. The LLM and SJD legal writing program seeks to develop international students’ legal analytical skills and equip students to write and speak clearly and persuasively, for diverse legal audiences and clients. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, the Director is responsible for: teaching the required LL.M. “Legal Analysis and Writing” and elective “Advanced Legal Analysis and Writing” courses; developing appropriate summer program options for foreign-trained lawyers and prospective LL.M. students; and working with linguists and professors to help students achieve expected benchmarks. The Director also provides academic advising to LL.M. students and assists in student services-related activities. This full-time faculty member will also co-direct the Law School’s Indigent Criminal Justice Practicum. This practicum is an experiential learning program jointly administered by companys J.D. program and the Public Defender’s Office of Centre County, Pennsylvania. Will teach the trial track of this practicum, which involves representation of indigent criminal defendants, accused of misdemeanor offenses in the Centre County Court of Common Pleas. Students learn litigation, negotiation and advocacy skills as they represent defendants through all stages of a criminal case. This hands-on experience is accompanied by a classroom component designed to give students guidance, feedback and an open forum to discuss their cases and the various facets of defense work. This faculty member may also be requested to teach courses in criminal law, and/or legal skills in the J.D. curriculum.
