Job Description:
What is the role
The role is as an Environmental Products Trader within the Global Environmental Products Trading Business (EPTB) based in San Diego. You will be expected to work alongside colleagues to build a profitable trade book, seeking out exposures that add structure, build flow, and embed optionality across the short and medium term. You will be working in a rapidly evolving business area, often in challenging regulatory and legal environments, requiring you to be innovative and capable of building deep commercial relationships with customers and counterparties.
Shell Energy is an industry leader and the key face to the market for Integrated Gas, providing more and cleaner energy across a global portfolio of LNG, gas, power, and environmental products to meet our suppliers’ and customers’ current and future energy needs. S hell Energy is positioned to play a significant role at the heart of Shell’s Energy Transition. Through the growth of our gas, LNG, power, and environmental products businesses, we are supporting our customers’ desire for more and cleaner energy. Shell Energy’s Ambition is to be the Leading Global Provider of Energy Products and Services; the Leader in Cleaner Energy Solutions; the Most Trusted Energy Partner; and a Winning Team.
The Environmental Products Trading Business (EPTB) operates in environmental product markets across the globe and has the following objectives:
Build Portfolios and Optimize: We leverage deep understanding of compliance and voluntary markets – and the connections between them – to capture opportunities across market mechanisms, geographies, methodologies, vintages, contract duration and type. We integrate perspectives from all demand sinks and supply sources in real time to take proprietary positions across the environmental value chain. This leads us to build portfolios that warehouse significant optionality, structure, and risk, with the objective of optimizing returns.
Risk Manage, Develop Structure, Take Positions: We warehouse risk – price, volume, credit, liquidity, reputation, technical, quality, operational, regulatory to name several – and pursue diversification & mitigation of these in our portfolio construction, structure development and option creation. This informs our proprietary position take, leading us to capture outright price movements from intraday through to multiple years.
Manage External Relationships: We are experienced in building long lasting relationships with third parties, from ideation through to start up and into material production or offtake. We are proficient in connecting the financing, commercial terms, operations, systems, and platforms that enable sustained delivery, continuously refining these in the pursuit of efficiencies and scale.
Agility: We anticipate new products and opportunities, pivot quickly and build positions ahead of market evolution. As examples: adapting to new restrictions, reinventing business models, commercializing emergent technologies and interpreting regulatory changes in and across the markets we participate in.
EPTB is a highly capable and creative global team with collaboration, humility, and a quiet determination at the core of our culture and identity. The role will require the individual to lead by example within this community and beyond, fostering effective relationships throughout the global team and across functions within SE-EE.
EPTB Americas is mandated to trade environmental products – regulated and voluntary - across all the Americas i.e., North, Central and South America. The desk is currently active in carbon markets in California, Quebec, Alberta, and the Regional Greenhouse Gasses Initiative (RGGI).
Reporting into the RTL Americas, you will primarily be responsible for meeting targets for Gross Margin, seeking out exposures that add structure, build flow, and embed optionality across the short and medium with an emphasis on material and sustainable contributions.
Your primary focus will be to accelerate book building in markets of existing capability; namely, the Western Climate Initiative and the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. The emphasis is on growing new, scalable, and sustainable income streams. Further, you will be expected to contribute to EPTB’s expansion into new products and new markets.
We require a creative, profit focused individual with excellent analytical skills and capable of contributing to our team ethos. Working under tight deadlines and conflicting pressures, the candidate will prove able to continue delivering to an excellent standard, with clear focus on the bottom line and priorities in hand.
This role is a challenging position with excellent development opportunities across T&S and the wider Shell group. Shell expects to play its part in contributing to the global effort to tackle climate change. This role is at the sharp edge of that challenge, requiring a confident and self-motivated individual with a strong passion for pursuing Shell’s Net Carbon Footprint ambition. We are interested in attracting people to our business who share our core working values of honesty, integrity and have respect for others. We also want those who can build on our business vision, are prepared to accept accountability, and can achieve great results through teamwork
What we need from you
Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
Bachelor’s Degree required.
Significant commercial experience in trading, carbon market and origination roles, with ability to influence customers and counterparts at the most senior level. Strong quantitative skills, the ability to progress complex negotiations and to structure/monetise optionality are essential.
Programming knowledge, especially Python, is highly desirable.
Ability to build trade books, develop/structure exposures, manage price risk and monetize opportunity. Clearly advantageous to have done so in American Environmental Product Markets. Experience in trade execution, managing trading exposures and generating value from optionality essential. Knowledge of “life-of-the-deal” process should be part of your toolkit.
Excellent communication, relationship building and presentation skills. To illustrate, the ability to present a compelling business case to senior management detailing the opportunity space, implementation plan, resources needed and the expected returns. Be able to build deep relationships with key stakeholders: customers, counterparties, senior leaders, exchanges, and regulators. English fluency requisite.
To be able to originate and structure the first deals, then “industrialize” the process so the deals can be easily repeated in scale.
