Senior Counsel - Regulatory
Duties: Assist General Counsel in managing the legal function of the organization. Develop and maintain familiarity with applicable laws, regulations and court rulings to assist the Company in achieving corporate objectives. Provides legal advice and services in connection with the conduct of the Company’s business to minimize legal exposure and enhance shareholder value by ensuring the Company’s compliance with applicable laws and regulations and with internal policies and procedures. Partner with colleagues across Markel out outside service providers to ensure functional and strategic goals are achieved while maintaining compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements. Responsible for reviewing and revising policy forms and endorsements and preparation of reinsurance treaties to comply with legal requirements and internal standard. Draft and negotiate ancillary reinsurance documents to comply with legal requirements. Track new/proposed legal and regulatory developments to give appropriate responses to mitigate impact on business or take advantage of opportunities. Provide advice on service agreements and arrangements relating to , acquisitions, services contracts, marketing agreements and general regulatory matters. Draft and negotiate contracts with producers. Assist in disputes with Producers. Coordinate response to financial and market conduct examinations. Negotiate and advocate insurance company’s positions with regulatory authorities. Assist in the preparation of regulatory filings to ensure compliance with applicable regulations as it relates to the Holding Company Act, Fraud, Disaster Reporting and commutations of reinsurance relationships. Work on special projects at the request of the General Counsel or Assistant General Counsel. Develop relationships with regulators in our domicile state Manage EPLI litigation against the Markel affiliates and provide status updates and manage litigation with outside counsel. Represent Markel at trade associations and industry meetings. Coordinate and handle all consumer complaints filed against the companies. Assist in resolution of disputes with service providers and manage litigation. Provides career planning and performance feedback to ensure proper staff development by coaching, motivating and building bench strength. Communicates effectively and ensure team has been adequately updated on matters relating to workflow or procedural changes.
