About Education and Upskilling Efforts at Tyson Foods
Corporate Social Responsibility at Tyson Foods implements a variety of education and upskilling efforts designed to help Tyson team members in our plants succeed in the workplace and in the community while also helping Tyson build a highly qualified and skilled workforce. These efforts are organized under two programs, Upward Academy and Pathways.
Upward Academy is a basic education and life skills program with a mission to ensure access to educational opportunities to our hourly team members by providing free and accessible classes in English as a Second Language (ESL), High School Equivalency (HSE), U.S. Citizenship, and other essential life and workplace skills such as digital and financial literacy.
Upward Pathways is Tyson’s career development program to prepare team members to fill essential job openings. Targeted work-related basic education is integrated with workforce preparation and training to provide an equitable promotional pathway. Supportive services reduce the constraints team member may face participating and completing the program. The program is a partnership between Tyson plants and adult education, workforce development and community-based partners. Upward Pathways culminates in a Tyson-branded credential that recognizes the skills and competencies gained by team members.
Both Upward Academy and Upward Pathways are implemented locally at our plants through public/private partnerships with federally and state funded adult education providers and upskilling organizations. Courses are conducted by adult education and workforce training instructors with extensive experience working with diverse communities. Most classes take place on-site at the Tyson plants with occasional offsite and distance education options. The goal is to provide team members the opportunity to learn in a familiar atmosphere with fewer obstacles around transportation, childcare and scheduling conflicts. Classes are typically scheduled before and after shifts.
