Assistant Vice President Technology Commercialization
Duties: Support and reinforce the Office of Technology Development’s (OTD) entrepreneurial culture of service to faculty, staff and the community. Provide input to the strategy and operations of the department with strategic plan and goals, seeking to increase the impact of patentable University-created technologies in the marketplace through new venture development and licensing activities. Increase the commercialization of intellectual property (IP) in the areas of traditional scientific discovery, medical devices, AI, machine learning, clinical decision support, innovative medical education, and more. Work collaboratively with OTD leadership to establish and maintain an effective technology transfer process to ensure optimal monetization of the IP portfolio. This includes preparation of marketing plans, valuation, and negotiating/executing licenses and options. Ensure effective stewardship of IP assets through the management of the patent portfolio and selection of outside counsel for patent application and infringement prosecution. Assist with recruiting and training of licensing and IP management professionals. Support the development and maintenance of an entrepreneurial culture across faculty, and with the business community, which values patents, licensing, and commercialization activity at a research university. Encourage and support faculty innovation and entrepreneurship by developing and maintaining simple and clear processes that support inventors from discovery through commercialization to produce economic and societal benefit. Engage, develop, and grow strategic external partnerships and collaborations that enhance research competencies, reputation and economic impact. Oversee activities related to guiding projects from the laboratory to the public, primarily through commercialization involving the private sector. In conjunction with Marketing and Public Affairs teams, develop and implement programs designed to identify faculty expertise and research projects and present them to the public.
