Job Summary
This job is responsible for providing safe, efficient and timely transportation of equipment, specimens, reports, and supplies to and from hospitals and other designated locations, using a courier vehicle.  An incumbent ensures that items are picked up and delivered on schedule and transported according to applicable requirements.  Follows established procedures for keeping vehicle interior and exterior clean, for conducting pre-trip inspections and monitoring preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.

In addition to performing job duties associated with the Courier job class, an incumbent performs lead work, including training less experienced staff and coordinating competency assessments, assisting with staff scheduling and troubleshooting delivery problems and related issues.  An incumbent must be prepared to cover unexpected route changes to ensure completion of all scheduled routes.  The work requires knowledge of internal procedures and tools applicable to the work unit at appointment.
 
Lead Job Duties 
1. Provides on-the-job training to courier staff as appropriate; coordinates staff competency assessments in accordance with established procedures; may assist in implementing new/revised procedures/processes by explaining changes and providing additional training.  
2. Monitors work flow to assist in preparing work schedules; observes staff performance for conformance with quality and productivity standards; may provide performance feedback as requested.
3. Investigates delivery problems (e.g. missed pickups) and/or other customer service-related complaints, resolves within designated scope of authority and escalates unresolved issues to higher-level authority.
4. Covers sick calls and makes route adjustments to ensure that all client pick-ups have been redistributed.
 
Essential Job Functions
Provides courier services by picking up and delivering items such as supplies, equipment and lab specimens as directed.
Transports and stores speciments in appropriate temperature containers in a safe, timely, and efficient mannger; informs management of unusual or jeopardized specimens, in accordance with all FHS policies and procedures.
Receives and transfers phone calls using company supplied mobile handheld devices, two-way radios, in field scanning equipment, etc.; maintains familiarity with processes for taking calls, trasnferring calls, and dispatching.
Maintains vehicle as per department standards and schedule, including interior and exterior cleanliness, pre-trip inspections, and reporting maintenance concerns promptly.

Additional Job Requirements
• Knowledge of established procedures, processes and tools applicable to the work unit and the function.
• Ability to effectively train and oversee the work the less experienced staff.

Recent related work experience that demonstrates the attainment of the requisite job knowledge, skills and abilities.
Satisfactory Abstract of Driving Record (Type: Employment Record) must be provided and meet departmental standards.

Additional Education/Work Experience
One year of work experience as a Courier (or equivalent), or any combination of experience or education that would demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.


Licensure/Certification
Current Washington State Driver’s License, subject to state vehicle verification to comply with hospital insurance requirements.
