JOB SUMMARY: Homemaker-Health Aides provide hands-on personal care to the ill, disabled, and/or handicapped individual in addition to providing a clean, healthy environment for clients and their families. Homemaker-Health Aides are supervised on a day-to-day basis by both the Coordinator of Services and the Director of Homemaker-Health Aides. They are annually evaluated by the Director of Homemaker-Health Aides.
Homemakers on a flexible schedule without full benefits specify the hours that they are available to work. Two weeks’ notice is required for a change in hours and availability. The program will fit the hours a worker is available into the needs for service by consumers. In exchange for flexibility in hours worked, these workers do not receive paid vacation, holidays, or paid medical insurance but do partake in some of the other benefits offered to employees. Exact benefits are specified at the time of hire. Homemakers will adhere to the Trauma-informed Care principles practiced by the Agency.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provision of personal care services such as assistance with bath, care of mouth, skin and hair, toileting, ambulating, transfers and range of motion exercises as demonstrated by appropriate personnel.*
2. Assistance to clients in relearning self-help skills such as ambulating, eating, food preparation (including special diets as prescribed), and taking oral medication that can be self-administered.*
3. Performance of household duties which will facilitate the client’s health care such as changing bed linens, doing consumers laundry, necessary ironing and mending, grocery shopping and other necessary errands, preparation of nutritious meals for client and/or family, light cleaning such as vacuuming, dusting, wet mopping, maintenance of kitchen and bathroom, defrosting refrigerator, and cleaning stove.*
4. Provision of respite care.
5. Transportation of client to medical appointments.
6. Assistance with pre-poured medication.*
7. Notification of Coordinator of Services of any changes in client’s condition, when unsure of client’s condition, or changes in homemaking requirements.*
8. Recording information needed to monitor client’s care in designated log book.*
9. Submission of time sheets and required records at designated times.*
10. Attendance and participation in in-service training sessions sponsored by the agency.*
11. Presentation of a pleasant manner and a neat, clean personal appearance while on direct service duty as well as performance of duties in a conscientious, courteous and efficient manner.*
Job Requirements
High School diploma, GED, or commensurate life experience. All Direct Care Workers will fulfill pre-enrollment qualifications, which include but are not limited to a face-to-face interview, references checks, background checks, health exam including two step TB testing and submittal of certificate of compliance PA State Department of Public Welfare Competency exam. If the candidate holds additional certificate, they must present copies for the files showing proof of certification. Good physical and mental health, including ability to stand and walk for long periods as well as to stoop, bend, climb and lift light loads while providing Direct Care Worker services; the commitment to empowering others to solve their own problems; valuing a nurturing family as the ideal environment for a person; conviction about the capacity of people to grow and change; awareness and sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics; ability to establish a respectful relationship with persons served to help them gain skills and confidence; the ability to work collaboratively with other personnel and/or service providers or professionals; the capacity to maintain a helping role and intervene appropriately to meet service goals; the ability to set appropriate limits; ability to read, write, keep simple records and follow instructions; ability to function as a team member; possession of a valid PA driver’s license and clean driving record, access to car with appropriate insurance; home or cell telephone; and excellent reliability.
