We are looking for a Back End Software Engineer who is dedicated, results-oriented, and a tenacious problem-solver to join the Society6 engineering team at our Santa Monica, CA office.  We solve big problems and do it at scale. If you want to work on a 1B document Elasticsearch cluster or more than a petabyte of high-resolution images, then come join our team.

You’ll Report To: Manager, Software Engineering
A typical day as a Software Engineer might include:
Collaborating with other members of the engineering team to build robust, reusable, and maintainable code to support and grow Society6
Diving into one of several microservices that power Society6’s back-end including our Catalog, Order Management, and Search engines
Designing and coding new application features and functionality, working closely with product, marketing, operations, and QA teams
You’ll be successful if you are a back-end engineer who understands how applications and databases scale. The ideal candidate is passionate about engineering and efficient APIs, and is excited to support UI engineers on initiatives that help build our business. What You Have:
Strong experience with at least one back end scripting language (PHP/Python/Ruby) and a willingness to improve your PHP and Python skills
Experience developing in back end frameworks (Laravel/Rails/Django) and following the standards for development within the framework
Strong knowledge across a variety of relational and no-sql databases (MySQL, Elasticsearch, Couchbase, Postgres, REDIS)
Experience scaling architecture and building RESTful APIs
Strong knowledge of OO concepts and design patterns
Solid understanding of BDD and TDD with a willingness to incorporate it into your development
Experience with continuous integration tools (e.g. Github, Travis CI, Jenkins)
Comfortable with Developer Tools, Git, Code Reviews, and Jira
Deeply care about application and database performance, loading fast, and staying fast
Ability to work independently and proactively
Excellent verbal and written communication
Not afraid to wear multiple hats - no job being too small or too large
Huge Pluses:
Experience with Laravel/Lumen PHP framework
Experience with Elasticsearch and/or Couchbase
Experience with Docker/Kubernetes
AWS (EC2, Route53, SNS, SQS)
CDNs (Cloudfront, Akamai)
