Associate General Counsel
The candidate consults with, advises, and provides legal services to the Church Council (board of directors) and to the churchwide organization in all legal/quasi-legal matters related to this church’s ministry and work (e.g., contracts, real estate, corporate and securities registrations, compliance, privacy, insurance filings, etc.) Prepares and/or oversees the preparation of filings with governmental agencies and maintains the Group Ruling with the Internal Revenue Service. Advises synod bishops and staff on legal, disciplinary, and constitutional matters affecting. Coordinates and monitors litigation where the is a party or is otherwise interested, along with coordinating external legal counsel; oversees legal matters referred to such counsel. Advises in responding to governmental investigations and public inquiries. Works with the Director for Risk Management on insurance claims, coverage, and loss-prevention programs for the churchwide organization, synods, and congregations. Participates in associations of attorneys representing religious organizations. Performs other duties as required. Should have a J.D. degree; 4+ years of legal experience. Must be a member of the bar of one of the fifty states. Admission to the Illinois Bar within a reasonable time is required. Familiar and conversant with nonprofit corporation law and governance, tax-exempt organizations, church/state relationships, and the unique legal issues affecting charitable, and religious organizations. Experience in the areas of contracts, employment, insurance, real estate, tax exemption, and litigation (especially personal injury) is preferred. Experience in the areas of immigration, trusts and estates, securities, and regulatory compliance is beneficial.  General knowledge of commitment to the mission and ministry of this church. General legal research and other online skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
