Overview
The editor of the Princeton Alumni Weekly -- a magazine for and by alumni with a circulation of more than 97,000 -- plans, produces, and manages its print and digital editions. PAW publishes 11 print issues per year and updates its web features continuously. The magazine includes features on Princeton and Princetonians; independent news coverage of the University; Class Notes connecting alumni with their peers; a robust letters section, and class memorials. Although PAW is a department of the University staffed by University employees, it maintains editorial independence as to content and benefits from an advisory board of alumni with media experience and members of the University and alumni community.
Reporting to the Vice President and Secretary of the University, the editor supervises a staff of 9 employees and maintains a large pool of freelance writers. The advisory board guides the editor on overall editorial strategy for PAW’s print and digital platforms, including frequency of publication, story selection, journalistic approach and other content-related issues. The position presents an opportunity for a creative and experienced editor to develop a strategy to enhance the importance and depth of PAW’s digital offerings, as well as a vision for how print and digital approaches can together serve existing audiences and create bonds with new readers.
Responsibilities
Provide overall strategic vision and leadership:
- Define the magazine’s vision and character, choosing and assigning stories that illuminate that vision, and negotiating the diverse goals and interests of the magazine’s different constituencies
- Work with PAW advisory board on long- and short-term editorial strategy and planning, including plans for revising the balance between print and digital offerings
- Lead periodic redesign process
Produce 11 print issues per year:
- Work with art director, publishing director, and other staff members to allocate pages in each issue
- Assign and edit feature stories, working with staff writers and freelancers from idea stage through multiple rounds of editing and revisions
- Collaborate with art director to ensure all articles have attractive and appropriate images.
- Read widely and be in conversation with people across the Princeton community to generate story ideas.
- Stay on top of campus, faculty, and student news to develop story ideas and approaches; attend significant campus events.
Oversight of digital platforms:
- Manage PAW’s online edition and digital platforms, including features that complement the magazine’s print coverage in innovative ways.
- In partnership with PAW staff and advisory board, build a vision for expanded digital offerings and digital initiatives that deepen ties with readers, especially among young alumni.
Office oversight and administration:
- Supervise a staff of 10 and a large roster of freelance writers around the world
- Manage a $2.5 million budget
