This is a lead position in Sterile Processing Service as a Medical Supply Technician (Lead Sterile Processing Technician). The incumbent is responsible for the lead duties in the Sterile Processing Service. The incumbent must complete the SPS Level I training program within 90 days of hire. The duties encompass providing technical and lead responsibilities. Incumbent must be able to direct and lead SPS personnel and communicate effectively to ensure user unit needs are met on a consistent basis. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience and/or Education: Experience: Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or Education: One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. English Language Proficiency: MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part. Grade Requirements: In addition to the basic requirements you must meet the following grade requirements. Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to instruct staff on the correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments. Skill in communicating with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules and regulations. Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers. Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures. Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments. Assignment: The Advanced MST assembles highly complex instrument sets including, but not limited to, open heart, major orthopedic total joint, cardiovascular, craniotomy and complex endoscopic instrumentation. Processes all complex endoscopic instrumentation to include those medical devices used in the gastroenterology laboratory, bronchoscopy laboratory, urology and operating room. Reviews manufacturer guidelines to ensure the correct methods and parameters are followed when cleaning, decontaminating and sterilizing RME. Troubleshoots and analyzes mechanical failures and makes necessary adjustments to complex decontamination and sterilization equipment, as well as interprets alarm conditions which may occur while operating the equipment. Informs management and healthcare staff when cleaning and processing standard operating procedures (SOPs) or instruction for use have been changed or updated to assure the changes have been validated to meet all guidelines. Physical Requirements: Work is sedentary but also demands standing, walking, bending, twisting, lifting, carrying sterilization trays, pulling and pushing up to 50 Pounds. [Duties include but are not limited to: The incumbent must possess the knowledge and skills to accurately and meticulously decontaminate, process, sterilize and high-level disinfect a wide variety of complex, medical, surgical, endoscopic and dental devices; Balances the workload among employees in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, assures timely accomplishment of the assigned workload; Monitors and reports the status and progress of work and adjusts workload according to established priorities; Incumbent maintains current knowledge of policies, VA Directives, IAHCSMM guidelines as well as knowledge of AAMI and AORN Standards; Incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of, and the ability to orient new staff, to a full range of: Sets and trays used throughout the medical center, including those used in the operating room, and medical/surgical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology; Acts as a preceptor to new staff members to include Contracting Staff, and Medical Enlisted Training College (METC) Joint services clinical Surgical/SPS training programs and assist in orientation and training under the guidance SPS Supervisors, Quality Assurance Staff and MST Instructors.
