Assistant General Counsel
The candidate will serve as a member of the Office of General Counsel, the in-house office that provides legal support and guidance to the University. Advise and support University clients, including the President’s staff, Vice Presidents, Deans, Department unit heads, faculty, and staff. Handle a range of employment, civil rights, student affairs, student disciplinary and other matters for academic and operational units as assigned by the Vice President and General Counsel (“VP-GC”). Team with and supports the Associate General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel and/or the VP-GC on select projects. Assist clients to respond to concerns in employment, academic, and residential environments; represents clients in internal administrative proceedings and statutory grievance hearings, advises clients on strategy, drafts policies and procedures; and supports regulatory compliance in a variety of contexts. Provide other legal services to University clients as directed by the VP-GC. Develop a working knowledge of legal, academic and operational issues relevant to matters of employment (faculty, staff and students), nondiscrimination and civil rights laws, whistleblower protections, sexual misconduct, Clery Act compliance, police misconduct and discipline, collective bargaining, special University units and the application of laws related to the University’s status as an instrumentality of the State and public corporation. Juris Doctor from an accredited U.S. law school and eligibility for admission to the state Bar required. 5+ years of relevant legal experience required. Outstanding writing, verbal, interpersonal and research skills required. Working knowledge of relevant Maryland laws, policies and processes preferred. Prior legal experience supporting a research-intensive public university preferred.
