Duties: Perform all types of legal work to develop strong understanding of, and skills in, a higher education legal practice. Work will allow the candidate to develop versatile legal skill set applicable to other types of in-house legal practice, including a government practice. Expected core responsibilities are performing legal research, contract review, responding to public records requests, assisting in the processing of subpoenas, garnishments, and bankruptcy notices, performing special projects as assigned, and developing systems (with oversight from the General Counsel or designee) and monitoring the same for staying abreast of legal and compliance developments relevant to higher education, including case law, state statutes and regulatory developments and federal statutes and regulatory developments. Perform legal research for the attorneys in the Office of General Counsel and the Chief Compliance Officer. Handle contract reviews independently and as assigned by an attorney in the office. Respond to public records requests. A paralegal in the Office of General Counsel handles the processing of public records requests and this attorney will work closely with the paralegal reviewing exemptions and determining how to respond to requests. Working with the paralegal provide legal advice regarding subpoenas, garnishments, and bankruptcy notices. Develop systems for the Office of General Counsel and Office of Compliance and Integrity to managing legal and compliance office developments. Perform compliance-related projects working independently or under direction of an attorney in the Office of General Counsel and/or the Chief Compliance Officer. Works on other special projects and assumes additional responsibilities as assigned by the General Counsel. Participates in bi-weekly staff meetings.
