Profile

Job Summary

As a user researcher with the Human Centered Design team, you will be responsible for leading IT projects through finding core user opportunities to solve, gathering information and evidence needed for design, and translating research into meaningfully simple and actionable insights. We get to work on challenges across the enterprise, so you will be asked to dig into topics ranging from point-of-purchase to production. Human Centered Design is in its first few years in Tyson IT and you will have the opportunity to help create and refine our standards while completing projects, as well as teaching internal partners how to leverage design research principles in their work.

Experience/Education

College degree (or equivalent experience) with 8 years of progressive experience in design, product or organizational strategy, user or market research, and/or advanced degree with 4 of progressive experience, including primary qualitative user research and design workshop facilitation. Required experience with data and research as applicable to software design/development. Required formal training in design thinking, design strategies, or design facilitation.

Progress Requirements

Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment is crucial. Ability to discern between business and user needs and understand how that affects a solution. Solid leadership skills. Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential. Can adapt to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities. Ability to uncover less visible users, discern nuance in user needs, and advocate for them during design. Persuasive, encouraging, and motivating. Ability to defuse tension among and between project teams, should it arise. Advanced interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. Adept at conducting research into project-related issues and products. Must be able to practice lean research, learn and apply new design research techniques, and quickly learn new technologies as applicable.

Critical Skills

Primary researcher: Manage project timelines through research, accounting for the fluid nature of HCD and iterative discovery. You will be asked to propose and execute research plans, and may be asked to lead workshops with business stakeholders and participate strategic design reviews.

Curious learner. Approaches everything with a learning/teaching mindset and asks when there is uncertainty. You will be asked to learn new areas of the business, data, and technology as they pertain to project challenges.

Adaptable self-starter: Knows what is needed to begin to ask “why” and initiates, adapting tools/techniques to fit the unique challenges. You will be asked to scope and create research plans and discover the deeper “what is, for whom, and why” of each challenge landscape.

Abstract Evidence Analyst: Distills large bodies of qualitative and quantitative data into clear, deep, directional insights and generative documentation, providing evidence to support and further design concepts. With designers and developers as two primary users of your research, you will be asked to gather and determine what data is meaningful for each phase of the project as you partner with other team members.

User (and Stakeholder) Advocate: Champions the human experience of each challenge, from validating the experience and effort of existing users and stakeholders to representing their needs through design. You will be asked to represent the voice of each throughout the project, from research through development.

Effective Storyteller: Communicates in ways that quickly connect others with the primary user emotions, needs, and experience. You will be asked to present research and design projects through a variety of formats, such as written case studies and presentations, with senior leaders and external engagements.

Designer Resource: Acts as a well of gathered knowledge and deciphered insights that the design team can draw on in developing the “how”. You will be asked to partner in solutioning, continuing to research new needs and test designs with users.

Human Centered Design teammate: Brings others with them along the journey, both on projects and in research growth. You will be asked to share your core areas of expertise to grow the design team and broader organization through teaching sessions and through helping build out the library of HCD standards and templates. You can also expect to have team members who invite you to learn from and partner with them.
