International Trade Associate or Counsel Export Controls

Job Overview
A law firm seeks a highly qualified Associate or Counsel to join its International Trade practice group in Washington, D.C. The ideal candidate will have 3-6 years of experience in U.S. export controls, focusing on the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Duties

• Provide regulatory and compliance guidance on EAR and ITAR.
• Conduct jurisdiction and classification analysis, including Commodity Jurisdiction and CCATS requests.
• Obtain export licenses and analyze license exceptions and exemptions.
• Conduct and supervise party screening and due diligence.
• Review, prepare, and file DDTC registrations and related filings.
• Develop international trade compliance programs based on risk analysis.
• Provide export controls compliance training.
• Represent clients in voluntary self-disclosures and M&A-related trade compliance diligence.
• Perform internal investigations and audits related to export control concerns.

Requirements

• Member of the state bar for the office location or eligible for admission by waiver.
• Excellent academic credentials.
• Highly developed organizational, writing, and analytical skills.

Education

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree.

Certifications

• Bar admission in relevant jurisdiction.

Skills

• Experience with EU and UK export controls regimes is a plus.
• Experience with encryption and emerging technologies is a plus.
• Knowledge of economic sanctions, outbound investment, and CFIUS is a plus.
