The Senior Systems Engineer for Virtualization has shared responsibility for the design, implementation and optimization of system infrastructure within the BCM Office of Information Technology (OIT), which includes server virtualization, storage virtualization and network virtualization, x86 hardware technologies, monitoring, systems management, security methodologies, capacity planning, environment failover and disaster recovery. As a member of the Core Infrastructure Team, you will be involved in IT infrastructure projects that will optimize current services as well as deploy and integrate new technologies for BCM, including private and public cloud based solutions. The Sr. Systems Virtualization Engineer will contribute to the overall success of the Core Enterprise Team by providing recommendations and key insight into the technological path of OIT. The Sr. Systems Virtualization Engineer must also have in depth expertise with VMware Products (vCloud Director, SRM, vCloud Automation, vStorage), x86 hardware, storage and networking technologies as well as other complex technical tools and solutions.
Duties:
*Function as a technical expert on infrastructure projects pertaining to virtualization, x86 hardware, monitoring, security methodologies, systems management, capacity planning, environment failover and disaster recovery.
*Perform infrastructure service implementations, performance analysis and optimization, monitoring, problem resolution, upgrade planning and execution, and process creation and documentation.
*Participate in cloud based services planning, design, and implementation; particularly in designing and implementing virtualization solutions to support BCM's adoption and use of an on-premise private cloud to those provided by third-party cloud service providers.
*Ensure new virtualization solutions are adequately tested and integrated with infrastructure and application services.
*Recommend, plan and optimize existing infrastructure services for virtualization as needed.
*Ensure service availability & reliability of all infrastructure services supporting virtualization.
*Ensure development and test environment exists for virtual infrastructure.
*Provide level II and level III technical support for OIT related to server, storage, and networking virtualization, x86 hardware, monitoring, systems management, security methodologies, capacity planning, environment failover & disaster recovery.
*Participate in ongoing technology evaluations and keep up with technology trends and industry standards.
*Assist in the management of virtualization support escalations between support teams.
*Lead ongoing lifecycle and support of the virtualization platforms for the infrastructure teams.
*Seek innovative solutions to problems and makes recommendations for implementations.
*As a part of the Office of Information Technology team, participate in SIPOC and business requirement gathering sessions, gathers user data requirements, understand the user requirements and assist in the reconciliation of technical and business requirements as they relate to data.
*Create, develop, and review documentation supporting the overall systems infrastructure, including; virtual server environment, virtualized storage & networking environments.
*Participate in maintaining, governing and enforcing infrastructure-related standards.
*Provide project reports and other documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
*Identify and evaluate future technologies for applicable solutions.
*Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation and meet the SLA's set with customers for the services provided.
Required: Five years of applied experience in x86 hardware deployment, management, and support in an enterprise environment with 2-3 years of applied experience with VMWare ESX, vCenter, and SRM in an enterprise environment.
Preferred: 1-2 years of applied experience in Windows systems administration in an enterprise environment.
Preferred: 1-2 years of applied experience with Linux in an enterprise environment.
Preferred: experience with any of the following: A , vCloud, RedHat, or Ubuntu.
Skills:
*Strong background in design, development and implementation of end-to-end solutions that integrate servers, network, storage, and applications seamlessly leveraging virtualization technologies
*Strong background in server virtualization technologies, specifically VMware ESX
*Strong background in x86 hardware technologies, storage and networking
*Experience in moving virtualized workloads between physical data centers
*Experience in automation and orchestration of provisioning models for service delivery of virtualized solutions
*Experience in open source cloud management platforms OpenStack and CloudStack
*Experience in researching and deploying new IT system applications and hardware platforms to capitalize on new technology to aid in improved service delivery and efficiency to lines of business
*Experience in developing information requirements and taking a project from conceptualization to implementation
*Innovative problem solving, design and testing skills
*Ability to work effectively in a team environment with aggressive deadlines and multiple priorities
*Ability to present and explain technical information to diverse types of audiences (management, users, vendors, technical staff) in a way that establishes rapport, persuades others, and gains understanding
*Demonstrates an eagerness to obtain domain knowledge in order to effectively leverage technical qualifications
*Ability to manage multiple and often conflicting tasks
*Experience in Life Sciences or Academic Medical Research Center a definite plus
*Excellent written and verbal skills
